In 1688, Falmouth was made a Royal Mail packet station and the town began. Until this point there was just one dwelling in the area with the main settlement being the nearby town of Penryn.

Henry V111 built Pendennis Castle to defend the Carrick Roads in 1540 which, together with St Mawes Castle on the east side meant the entry to the estuary was well defended.

The Helford River is a large estuary that sits snugly between the western edge of Falmouth bay and the eastern side of The lizard.
Falmouth has a host of Watersports companies offering a wide range of watersports. Elemental UK is one of them and located at Swanpool beach and is a Cornish adventure centre offering watersports for the novice to the expert.
The beaches are less than five minutes walk, with gyllyngvase beach being the nearest. You can then travel by road or take a strole along the cliff path to Swanpool beach then onto Meanporth
